God revealed to me something new about this statement. The new knowledge and revelation of it helped me understand what I am really asking God; basically this statement went to a new level. It’s new to me, haha, but it might not be new to you. If it is, then I hope this blesses you. If not, then God bless you for you already have been given knowledge!
I read earlier from Christine Jung (correct me if I’m wrong Christine), that this is a dangerous prayer request. Breaking the heart is a painful process and nobody in the right mind likes pain. Some people, including myself, like the reason behind pain. It could because of refining, character development, discipline, and/or sanctification. In other words, all pain can help me be more like Christ with the correct perspective. And to go back to my earlier point, no body likes pain. Yet, so many people, which I am a part of, say this prayer and have this emotional aspect that stirs in our hearts do not understand what we are asking! This prayer is saying, “God! Let me experience what You are experiencing! Let me go through what You are going through!” But what does that MEAN!?!
The first shell of this prayer is, “Let me have a heart like Jesus”. It is the most beautiful thing for someone to have a heart like Jesus and it can only be completed once we go to Heaven. This prayer is asking for you to have the same emotions as God does, the same compassion as God does, the same love as God does.
But! I know there is something deeper within this statement, so I asked God, “What more do you want to show me in this statement God??”
He just gave me one word, which was “relationship”. You CANNOT have someone’s heart without wanting a relationship! It is ridiculous if you ask someone to share with you what gives him the most pain and then not want a relationship! God! Forgive me because I know I have said this prayer without thinking of a relationship with you! And I believe some people just say this because it sounds “holy” or “righteous”. When in reality, the most holy and righteous prayer is to ask God to be in a relationship with you, forever.
After I received this word, I thanked God because I understand now that every time I say this prayer, I am really asking for a relationship with God.
To understand “break my heart for what breaks yours”, we must first understand what breaks God’s heart. What gives Him the MOST pain? The evils that we do, the sins we foster and exercise are what gives God the most pain. The primes of His creation, fallen by one act of sin. His masterpieces refusing to enjoy in their Creator’s joy. When we decide to sin, we give Him the most pain.
So, sin is what breaks God’s heart. What does “break my heart for what breaks yours” look like then? One way it looks like is in Ezekiel 6:9-10
“then those of you who escape will remember me among the nations where they are carried captive, how I have been broken over their whoring heart that has departed from me and over their eyes that go whoring after their idols. And they will be loathsome in their own sight for the evils that they have committed, for all their abominations. And they shall know that I am the LORD. I have not said in vain that I would do this evil to them.”
Short background: God is talking about the Exile, His people have been rebelling against Him and His commandments even after God warned them of upcoming judgment, the Exile. Yet, they refused, so God let the Exile happen.
I bolded one word, “broken”. God’s heart is broken because of Israel’s whoring heart. God’s heart is broken because of our whoring hearts.
After the Exile, Israel will be loathsome of their own evils they have committed. Being loathsome of our own evils, that shame and guilt. The prerequisite feelings before repentance; a change of heart. Holy guilt, stirred by the Holy Spirit in us, will lead to holy repentance. (Any guilt after genuine repentance is the enemy trying to keep you in the past. Break free from that!) Holy repentance led by the Holy Spirit will lead you to v. 10. You will know the LORD. Repentance helps you understand God!
So when you pray this prayer, you are asking God for a relationship with Him. Yet, you cannot have a relationship without knowing who God is. Repentance will lead you to know God. A change of heart and lifestyle in line with the Bible will lead you to know God. Let the goal of this prayer be that you understand who God is more and more. Grow in the knowledge of Him because when you learn more about Him, you cannot help but to fall more in love with Him.
God bless.
