Visiting this specific tribe, Lajas Blancas, was one of the highlights of Panama Missions 2011. This girl is just one of the 40-50 little kids there during VBS. I found her among other kids during crafts time and since she is so small, she was pushed out of the circle. I sat by her and put her in my lap. She was so reserved at first. I asked for the crafts, which were hats, and some stickers. With my broken and non-existent Spanish I communicated with her. Asking where she wants the sticker with aqui? aqui? bueno? oohh muy bien! Yes, those were the ONLY Spanish words I said to her. But there is a language above mere words, a language I call the heart language. I just kept pouring out my love on this little kid, hoping she would receive some of it and understand what I am saying or doing through my actions and affection.
Now, something you must know to make the story funnier, I went to Panama as one of the media team members, my sole job: to take pictures. The moment I placed her on my lap, I gave up all responsibilities as a photographer. Talk to anyone who was on my team. I even let someone take pictures for me. (Thanks Charles and Chris Won).
I carried around this girl as if she was the only little kid. I really spoiled her with my love and attention as Mel said I did. No shame.
While I was carrying her, I was borderline deciding to just stay in Panama so that I can take care of her. Of course, that was an outrageous and stupid thing to consider. But, my love for this kid was that deep. I miss her so much. Every time I see this picture I am reminded in my mind of her laugh and smile. It always leads me to pray for her and the tribe. God, please be with her and raise her up to be a woman of God! Who loves and serves her tribe while carrying the name of Christ Jesus, the Lord of lords. I miss her so much.
I believe her name was Cantare. But not 100% sure, she was very quiet when she said it.
Ah man. One of my favorite moments with her was when she had a balloon animal. She would hide her face and then I would cover my eyes and say “donde? donde?” (Where? Where?) Then suddenly uncover my eyes and look at her and say “Alli!” (There!) Yes, it is extremely lame, but we both laughed as if it was the best thing on earth. My heart was so full from her laughter. God, please bless her.
